Spotlight: Color is beautiful.
Since the first fashion magazine in the late 19th century, racial prejudice has existed. Unfortunately, in 2008 there still hasn't been much change in the magazines we read, with only one black model having her own fashion story an issue, or on the runways where a minority will have one look the entire show.
In a reverse of the general pattern of fashion magazines, all the faces in the July issue of Italian Vogue will be black models, and all the features will be related to black women in the arts and entertainment industry. Steven Meisel, one of the most influential photographers in fashion, was given 100 pages which he filled with images of Naomi Campbell, Alex Wek, Liya Kebede, Pat Cleveland, Sessilee Lopez, Veronica Webb, and Karen Alexander to name a few.
Now will there be other fashion magazines featuring models of different ethnic backgrounds? I am sure there are a lot of Japanese, Chinese and Indian fashion models who deserve the same recognition.
