Talk about a paper cut.

Wormholes, MRI scans and dead bodies. All these things inspire artist Jen Stark, who is known for creating hypnotic paper sculptures. Having a sister who is a doctor, Stark had sectional anatomy textbooks to look through. "Seeing the human body displayed like a flip book was grotesque, yet mesmerizing," says Stark.

Jen doesn't use software or complicated hardware to create her pieces. She sketches her designs and then slices, using her X-Acto knife. This is one woman with a knife you should definitely stay away from.

Polish the city twice a day.

Having become world-renowned for his stainless steel sculptures of “scholars' rocks,” Zhan Wang, a respected artist in China, painstakingly creates his pieces of art by bending, heating and molding sections of stainless steel plates across the cloud-like topography of each rock. The graceful, craggy boulders can be found in several provinces around China that seem to have been sculpted by natural forces.

The artist created a topographical San Francisco cityscape, using steel rocks, mirrored surfaces, silverware, and stainless steel pots and pans.

Spotlight: Thomas Heatherwick

The Rolling Bridge

Longchamp Flagship in NYC

Thomas Heatherwick is known for his innovative engineering and use of materials. The popularity of Heatherwick's designs shows us his drive to make his work comprehensible to people who don't know the first thing about design. His work sometimes get this London-based designer mislabeled as a sculptor or artist.

B of the Bang

The Bleigiessen

The perfect example of how powerfully Heatherwick's designs affect people would be "The Bleigiessen" in central London. Th seven-story sculpture is made up of more than a hundred and forty-two thousand glass spheres, in a pattern outlining the shape of molten lead dropped in water. The Wellcome Trust, a British medical foundation, got a taste of the Heatherwick effect three years ago, after it commissioned him to do The Bleigiessen for their atrium. The foundation is closed to the public, but demand to see the sculpture has been so intense that it now opens its doors once a month to show off Heatherwick's work.

The Vents

Harvey Nichols

Heatherwick founded the Thomas Heatherwick Studio in 1994 to bring architecture, design and sculpture together within a single practice.
The studio's work spans commercial and residential building projects, master-planning and infrastructure schemes, as well as high profile works of public art.
